WEEK 8 : PRUNING

Hello and good day!. I will be share with you guys the activities that I did every Friday for FPA200. We moved in large numbers to gather at the parking lot in front of the FPA's block. After that, we start our day like usual.

This is our nature work done for this day: (17/5/2024)

DETAIL INFORMATION

EQUIPMENT NEEDED

  1. Hat
  2. Boot
  3. Gloves
  4. Hand saw (8 unit)
  5. Tree shears (5 unit)

OBJECTIVE

  1.          Conduct brief, selective pruning to enchance growth and fruit quality at the durian plot.

NATURE OF WORK DONE

TIME

ACTIVITY

6.30 – 8.00 AM

  1. All part 3 student gathered at the parking lot. After that, class repsentative took the attendance. All student do warmup activities before go to Agrotech.
  2. All student gathered to AgrotechPlantation Site by classes.
  3. Song the Negaraku, Wawasan Setia Warga UiTM and Planter’s Song.

8.00-8.20 AM

Take the equipment wanted to used to have done activities in the durian plot.

8.30 – 10.00 AM

Move to the durian plot and started the activity

10.00 – 10.30 AM

TAKE A BREAK

10.35 – 10.40

Continue the activity again, prepared the tree that could have been made until it was finished

11.00 AM

Finish the task

Pictures while did the activity and the description

Before

After

Tree 2

For this second tree, tree grew only one new bud

Tree 2

Then I removed it using pruning shears

Tree 3

I remove damaged and leafless branches

Tree 3

Branches that had leaves that had been cut I replaced them as mulching

Tree 4

this tree has very thick leaves and small branches that grow evenly on the trunk of the main tree

Tree 4

After being processed, this tree looked neat according to the size of its canopy, I would leave 1/3 of the leaves from each branch, and remove new shoots that were not needed

Tree 5

this tree has new branches that have joined a lot, so I have to cut them with a saw

Tree 5

After cutting and removing the damaged and dry branches, I collected the waste and make the leaves as mulch on every tree that I had processed

Tree 6

for this tree, the lecture informed that it is only necessary to take care of the tree, which is to remove the damaged branches and prune the excess buds

Tree 6

I replaced the leaves as a mulch material so that the durian tree can protect the tree from losing water due to the hot weather these days

Tree 7

on a tree with many branches that have lost many leaves due to the hot weather

Tree 7

the appearance of the tree after processing and leaving only a few branches so that it can grow faster

Tree 8

This tree has a fine trunk, so I just use scissors to remove unnecessary branches

Tree 8

look after being processed and not cut too extreme so that this tree produces more leaves and flowers more quickly in future

Tree 9

this tree has new branches that have joined a lot, so I have to cut them with a saw

Tree 9

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

 (4 Advantages pruning a tree)

1. Improved Health: Pruning removes dead or diseased branches, promoting better air circulation and reducing the risk of infections, ultimately enhancing the overall health of the tree.

2. Enhanced Structure: Proper pruning encourages a strong and balanced branch structure, reducing the likelihood of breakage during storms or heavy fruit loads.

3. Increased Yield: Pruning stimulates new growth and directs the tree's energy toward fruit production, leading to higher yields of better-quality fruits.

4. Safety and Accessibility: Trimming back branches eliminates hazards such as low-hanging limbs that might obstruct pathways or pose risks to structures, improving safety and making it easier to access the tree for maintenance tasks.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, implementing pruning practices at the durian tree plot offers numerous benefits. By selectively removing branches, we can enhance the tree's health, structure, and productivity. Pruning promotes airflow, reduces disease risk, and encourages stronger branch development, which ultimately leads to increased fruit yield and better-quality durians. Additionally, it improves safety by eliminating hazards and facilitates easier access for maintenance activities. Overall, pruning is a valuable management technique that contributes to the long-term success and sustainability of durian cultivation.

NEXT ACTIVITY SUGGESTION

TYPE OF WORK :

spraying pesticides in the durian plot using the right technique

EQUIPMENT NEEDED :

  • Goggle
  • Facemask
  • Nitrite glove
  • Boots
  • Plastic apron
  • Liquid pesticide
  • Pressure sprayer 10 liter manual bottle knapsack

OBJECTIVES:

  •  Apply targeted pesticide treatment to mitigate pest infestations and protect the health and yield of durian trees.
